Tempe, AZ, also known as Hayden’s Ferry, was first established around 1865. During that time, US military service members and Hispanic workers were hired to grow food and animal feed to supply Fort McDowell which was located about 25 miles northeast of present downtown Tempe. Within a year, they began to set up small campers near the river that became the first permanent communities in the Valley of the Sun after the fall of Hohokam. Today, Tempe is a thriving suburb to the east of Phoenix offering employment, housing, and plenty of activities to keep you busy for days!
